Will mostly be the higher end Essence model. Is this the affordable premium American (German) model that will make wagons great again? Until the V60 arrives, anyway.

Update- Trim Breakdown via Autotrader:

The base trim ($29,100) is sparsely equipped for something marketed as a “premium” car, but still gets an ample array of included infotainment features. Standard equipment includes 18-inch wheels, fog lamps, automatic headlights, LED running lights, passive entry and keyless start, manual-adjustable seats, cloth upholstery, a 60/40-split back seat, a rearview camera, OnStar emergency communications, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, one USB port, a 7-in touchscreen interface, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Despite its hefty extra cost, the Preferred ($32,700) only adds 8-way power front seats with lumbar adjustment, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a different steering wheel. It does, however, open the door to a variety of options. The Sights and Sounds package adds remote ignition, upgraded gauges, an 8-in touchscreen, integrated navigation and an 8-speaker Bose sound system. The Driver Confidence I package adds auto-leveling LED headlights, rear parking sensors and blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning systems.

The Essence ($35,100) adds a hands-free lift gate, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and a 40/20/40-split folding back seat. The Essence’s Sights and Sound package equipment is also included, with the exception of the Bose sound system, which is available separately. The Essence Driver Confidence I package adds the same items from the Preferred’s version, but further adds driver-memory functions, wireless smartphone charging and an auto-dimming mirror. The Driver Confidence II package adds forward-collision warning with emergency automatic braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning and steering assist and adaptive cruise control.

I already know from looking at it that the claustrophobia will be palpable. And those rims hurt my eyes. It looks like a slight knockoff of the TSX wagon.

My neighbor’s 2004 V70R is looking more appealing by the day. It isn’t technically for sale, but only because I haven’t knocked on his door yet.

The problem with comparison tests is they look at wagon vs wagon too closely, which sort of ignores how people actually shop. Which is that they’ll look at a couple wagons and end up in an XC60.

I was in the back seat of the sedan Opel version, and I’m not a tall guy but man, the headroom was terrible. I was even drunk and not in car-guy mode and I still noticed it. I’ve heard similar complaints from others, so I’m interested if the long roof fixes the issue.

Couldn’t agree more. Just give me body color at least. I also don’t like how the ones in the front have the extra little “tab” that extends up. It would probably at least look better in all black?

I wouldn’t have high expectations. If you haven’t seen or read a lot of reviews, check this one out it pretty much sums it up

What really matters to me right now is space BEHIND the rear seat, with it up (normal), because car seats. Our Volvo XC70 crushes that category, which is why we have it. I don’t need vertical space, goddamnit I’m not transporting pillows. I can’t stack my dogs on top of coolers.

The linked article is sorta helpful but, mostly, useless. Auto magazines need to run cost comparisons for like-equipped cars in order for anything to be meaningful. And always include 0-60 or 20-80mph times.

6 Speed diesel? Son, This is ‘Murrica which means you get a choice of V8 RWD muscle car/ diesel truck OR turbo4 cylinder FWD based CVT crossover.

There is no middle ground! Estate? what’s an Estate?

Price is very much V60 territory but true Volvo may have a more efficient interior space in the smaller car making it effectively the same as the Buick.

The 2019 V60 will be way more expensive. Pricing has not been released yet but the FWD 250HP version itself is supposed to start at $40K. The T6 AWD version which I want should be close to 50K new. V90 is out of question anyway for me price wise unless a really good used example comes along.

I swear I can fit the same amount of stuff in my E46 wagon as my wife’s X3, and I really mean that. Partly because I can open the window and cram stuff in that way. The X3 I can only fit what I can stack with the whole door open.

The V60 would be my pick as Volvo styling has been stellar lately and you can get a decently powerful hybrid setup in a practical package.

Yes! They must know that people aren’t falling for the fake “ooo this car is almost an SUV - look at them rugged fenders” bullshit!

Ask them if the cars will be delivered with this cheap wheel arch protecting black plastic, much like the plastic on the seats when its delivered.
